Liu CJ, Latham NK · 2009 · Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (3):CD002759

REZA evidence rating A: High confidenceWhat does this rating mean?

Multiple consistent meta-analyses or a position stand. Sufficient basis for a fixed choice in the coaching.

Methodology

Cochrane systematic review

Findings

Progressive resistance training improves physical function in older adults, such as walking speed and the ability to rise from a chair, with a small positive effect on strength.

Limitations

Most participants were community-dwelling older adults; effects in frail or institutionalised older adults are less clear and study quality varied.

Practical conclusion for REZA

Progressive resistance training is a well-supported, safe recommendation for older adults wanting to maintain daily function.
