Resistance Training Variables for Optimization of Muscle Hypertrophy: An Umbrella Review

Plotkin DL, Roberts MD, Haun CT, Galpin AJ · 2022 · Frontiers in Sports and Active Living

REZA evidence rating A: High confidence

Methodology

Evidence overview

Population

Umbrella review of multiple meta-analyses; healthy adults

Intervention

N/A (umbrella review of meta-analyses)

Findings

Volume is the primary driver of hypertrophy; load and frequency are secondary once volume is equated. Rest intervals have minimal impact, full range of motion is slightly favoured over partial, and training to complete failure is not required.

Outcome measures

Muscle hypertrophy

Limitations

Inherits the limitations of included meta-analyses; overlap between primary studies; most data from untrained populations.
