BMuscle hypertrophy and strength gains after resistance training with different volume-matched loads: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Schoenfeld BJ, Grgic J, Van Every DW, Plotkin DL · 2022 · Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism
REZA evidence rating B: Reasonable confidence
Methodology
Meta-analysis
Population
Multiple studies; trained and untrained adults
Intervention
Different loads (low, moderate, high) with matched volume
Findings
When volume is matched (not necessarily to failure), hypertrophy is similar across loads, while strength still favours heavier loads — showing load flexibility for hypertrophy as long as volume is matched.
Outcome measures
Muscle hypertrophy, maximal strength
Limitations
Limited volume-matched studies; heterogeneity; mostly untrained.
