Population

Children and adolescents; the statement notes that children as young as 5-6 years can benefit from and safely participate in supervised resistance training

Intervention

Supervised, age-appropriate resistance training (bodyweight, machines, free weights, medicine balls, elastic bands) with qualified instruction

Findings

Supervised, appropriately designed resistance training is safe and effective for children and adolescents, does not harm growth or damage growth plates, and can enhance strength, motor skills, bone health and sport performance while reducing sports-injury risk. Technique mastery precedes load progression, and maximal lifts are avoided in inexperienced youth.

Limitations
